In the middle of the night Mary woke up. Heavy rain had strated falling again, and the wind was blowing violently round the walls of the old house. Suddenly she heard the crying again. This time she decided to discover who it was. She left her room, and in the darkness followed the crying sound, round corners and through doors, up and down stairs, to other side of the big house.At last she found the right room. She pushed the door open and went it.
玛丽在半夜醒了过来。外面又下起了大雨，风打在墙上呼呼作响。突然她又听到了哭声，这次她定要找到是谁在哭。她走出了房间，在一片漆黑中，顺着哭声，她走过拐角，穿过房间，上楼又下楼，到了房子的另一边。最后，她找到了那有哭声传出来的房间，推开门走了进去。
It was a big room with beautiful old furniture and pictures. In the large bed was a boy, who looked tired and cross, with thin, white, tearful face. He stared at Mary.
这是间大房，摆放着精美的旧家具和墙上挂着漂亮的画。大床上有个面容消瘦、脸色苍白的男孩正在哭，他看上去没什么精神。他看着玛丽。
"Who are you?"he whispered, "Are you a dream?"
“你是谁？”他小声说，“你在梦游吗？”
"No, i am not. I am Mary Lennox, Mr Craven's my uncle."
“没，我不是梦游。我是玛丽·伦诺克斯，我叔叔是克莱夫先生。”
"He's my father."said the boy."I am Colin Craven."
“他是我爸”男孩说，“我是柯林·克莱夫”
"No one ever told me he had a son"said Mary, very surprised.
“都没人跟我说过他有个儿子”玛丽吃惊地说。
"well, no one ever told me you'd come to live here. i am ill, you see. i don't want people to see me and talk about me. If i live, i may have a crooked back like my father, but i'll probably die. "
“哦，也没人跟我说过你住这来了。我病着呢，你看得到，我不想人们见我议论我。我要是活着，会像我爸一样是个驼背，但我应该活不了多久了?！?/p>
"What a strange house this is."said Mary."So many secrets! Does your father come and see you often ?"

"Not often. He doesn't like seeing me because it makes him remember my mother. She died when i was born, so he almost hates me, i think."
“不常来。他不喜欢来看我，因为那会让他想起我母亲。她是生我的时候死的，我想他应该是恨我的?！?/p>
"Why do you say you're going to die?"asked Mary.
“你怎么说你要死了？”玛丽问。
"I've always been ill.i've nearly died several times, and my back's never strong. My doctor feels sure that i'm going to die. But he's my father's cousin, and very poor, so he'd like me to die. Then he'd got all the money when my father dies. He gives me medicine and tells me to rest. We had a grand doctor from London once,? who told me to go out in the fresh air and try to get well. But i hate fresh air. And another thing, all the servants have to do what i want, because? if i'm angry, i become ill."
“我总是生病，有几次都差点死了，还有我的背也挺不直。医治我的医生说我活不久了。但那医生是我父亲的堂兄，没什么钱，所以他也想我死。那样，我父亲死时他就能继续所有的家产了。他给我开了药让多休息。一次，我们从伦敦请来一名名医，他让我多到室外走走会渐渐好起来的，但我不喜欢出房间。还有一件事是仆人都得按我想的来做，因为我一生气就犯病?！?/p>
Mary thought she liked this boy, although he seemed so strange. He asked her lots of questions, and she told him all about her life in India.
玛丽心想她喜欢这男孩，尽管他看着很奇怪。他问了她许多的问题，她也把她在印度的生活都细细给他说了一遍。
"How old are you?" he asked suddenly.
“你多大了？”他突然问。
"i am ten, so are you."replied Mary forgetting to be careful, "because when you were born the garden door was locked and the? key was buried. And i know that was ten years ago."
“我10岁，你也10岁?！甭昀鲆还赡缘厮?，“因为你出生的那花园的门锁了钥匙也埋了，我知道，那都是十年前的事了?！?/p>
Colin sat up in bed and looked very interested. "What door? Who locked it? Where's the key? I want to see it. I'll make the servants tell me where it is. They'll take me there and you can come too."
柯林非常兴奋地从床上坐了起来。“什么门？谁锁的门？钥匙在哪？我想去看看那花园。我会问仆人那花园在哪？他们带我过去时，你也可以跟着去?！?/p>
"Oh, please, Don't――don't do that!" cried Mary.
“哦，别…别让仆人带你去花园！”玛丽大声说。
Colin stared at her. 'Don't you want to see it?'
柯林盯着玛丽。“难道你不想去看看那花园？”
"Yes, but if you make them open the door, it will never be a secret again. You see, if only we know about it, if we――if we can find the key, we can go and play there every? day.we can help the garden come alive again. and no one will know about it――except us!"
“我想，但你要是让仆人带你去看那花园，那就不再是秘密了。你想要是只有我们两个知道，要是我们――要是我们能找到钥匙，我们就能每天都到花园里去玩了。我们可以让花园重新开满了花，并且除了我们自己，谁也不会知道”
"I see," said Colin slowly. "yes, i'd like that. it'll be our secret. i've never had a secret before."
“我知道了?！笨铝只夯旱厮怠！昂?，那正合我意。那就是我俩的秘密了。我还没有过秘密呢?！?/p>
"And perhaps," added Mary clevely. "we can find a boy to push you in your wheelchair, if you can't walk, and we can go there together without any other people. you'll feel better outside. i know i do."
“或许”玛丽还在说“要是你走不了路的话，我们可以找个男孩子来给你推轮椅，然后我们3个人一起到花园里去。你也会渐渐好起来的，我就是这样的”
"I'd like that."he said dreamily."i think i'd like fresh air, in the secret garden."
“我想我会好起来的”他痴痴地说着，“我也会喜欢秘密花园的”
Then Mary told him about the moor, and Dickon, and? Ben Weatherstaff, and the ribbon, and Colin listened to it all with great interested. He began to smile and look much happier.
接着玛丽还跟他说了荒原，迪肯，本·威瑟斯塔福和知更鸟等，柯林都很认真地听着，脸上渐渐地有了笑容，看起来心情好了不少。
"i like having you here."he said. "You must come and see me every day. But i'm tired now."
“我喜欢你在这儿”他说?！澳阋刻於祭纯次?，但我现在累了?！?/p>
